TechTalk: Alleghany County’s Dept of Human Services Use of Analytical Tools to Support Critical Decisions

Wednesday, October 6, 2021 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Learn how the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) uses predictive risk modeling to improve critical decisions for front line staff. Join Erin Dalton, Director of the Allegheny County DHS as she shares how DHS worked with researchers to create the Allegheny Family Screening Tool (AFST), which rapidly analyzes hundreds of data elements for each person involved in an allegation of child maltreatment to derive a validated indicator of risk. The child welfare staff responsible for deciding on whether or not to open a case use the AFST as a key input in their decision-making. Since the time Allegheny County began using the AFST, it has improved the identification of children determined to be in need of further children welfare intervention and reduced racial disparity in case opening rates between Black and White children.
